Healing Touch- What it is and How it Helps Children Combat Cancer

hands-1461555427fAd.jpg

It’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and here at Answers for Angels, we stop at nothing to ensure that children get the help they need in their battles with this terrible disease. This month, we’ll talk about another alternative modality that can be used to help heal your child.

In 1989, registered nurse Janet Mentgen founded a type of energy therapy called “Healing Touch”. In this therapy, practitioners use their hands and intent to influence the energy field and promote healing in the patient.

Healing Touch uses light touch or near-body touch, meaning they don’t actually have to make contact in order to shift your energy to flow more effectively. Since our energy fields go beyond our skin, they are able to achieve the same effect in moving energy around as they would by actually touching you.

This type of therapy is used to help restore or recharge energy that has been lost due to physical and mental conditions or illness. This can be from stress, injury, dietary issues, trauma, grief, surgery, or diseases such as cancer.

Traditional treatment for cancer such as radiation and chemotherapy can absolutely drain the patient, as many are known to experience extreme exhaustion and general feelings of not being well. This is in part due to one’s energy being heavily manipulated during those treatments and in the theory of Healing Touch, would need to be corrected by an energy healing practitioner.

The use of Healing Touch has grown rapidly in recent years. Many hospitals and other health facilities have incorporated Healing Touch programs due to its success with patients and the positive reviews that are received afterward. Many have claimed that because of Healing Touch, they have experienced less pain, less fatigue, less anxiety, less depression, lower stress, improved sleep, improved sense of calmness, a more profound spiritual connection, and faster recovery. One study found that those who participated in Healing Touch actually had an improved immune response. They had less toxicity to cells within the immune system aka “natural killer cells”, which play a major role in fighting cancer (Eldridge).

Dr. Weil of the University of Arizona Integrative Medicine Clinic recommends energy therapies as he believes that the value of such modalities have been proven beyond refutation. It’s a perfect alternative approach for those following holistic and traditional treatments alike. In either case, there’s a very good chance that it will benefit you in some way.

In a general healing touch session, the patient will sit or lie down (fully clothed) while the practitioner passes their hands over your body somewhere in the range of 2-6 inches from your skin. Once the practitioner assesses the current state of your energy field, they will then begin a systematic process of clearing, balancing, and re-balancing the energy until it is flowing in an efficient, harmonious way. It is a very relaxing experience and some may even fall asleep during the process. At the end, the practitioner grounds you and will encourage you to remain sitting or lying down for a few minutes until you feel comfortable getting up. This is an incredibly noninvasive, gentle, and calming method of treatment.

Check out this video to see how healing touch helps children with Autism and cancer.

If you are interested in implementing healing touch into your child’s treatment plan, research local facilities in your area to find which ones offer this amazing program.

Let the Healing Touch help your child!

Is Your Child’s Drinking Water Safe?

24776544840_79124c7f5b_b

After the Flint Water Crisis that exposed 6,000-12,000 children to lead poisoning, water toxicity is becoming a topic that (rightfully so) remains in the forefront of parents’ minds. In New Jersey, several schools within the city of Newark showed elevated levels of lead. The same is true in Howland, Ohio and other cities nationwide. The question remains: is the water that your children ingests really safe?

According to experts, there is no safe level of lead exposure, especially when dealing with children who are most vulnerable to its effects. Even small amounts of lead can be incredibly dangerous, as the levels build up in your body over time. For children 6 and under, it’s an even bigger risk since they are still physically developing and absorb it easier than adults do. It can hinder or damage brain development, which is why it’s not something that you want your child to come into contact with. Other issues that it can cause for children are behavioral and learning problems, slowed growth, hearing problems, headaches, anemia, seizures, coma, and even death. Yet more than half a million children ages 1-5 have blood lead levels higher than the “level of concern” which is 5 micrograms per deciliter.

Why is that number so high? Well, part of the issue is that it can be hard to detect the signs of lead poisoning. Below are some indicators that you need to be on the lookout for with your child:

  • Fatigue, lethargy, or hyperactivity
  • Headaches
  • Weight Loss
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Constipation
  • Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
  • Poor Appetite
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Learning difficulties or reduced cognitive abilities
  • Slowed growth

The other part of the equation is that while testing is getting better due to the latest crises, it’s something that needs to happen much more frequently and consistently in order to keep our children safe from harm. If you are worried about the piping system at your child’s school, get in touch with the school administration and talk to them about having the water tested.

Even the soil that children play in might be contaminated with lead, especially if it’s in an urban area or near busy roads. Keep this in mind when choosing where to live so that you children can get into a safer, more environmentally friendly district. Both inside and outside of school, take extra precautions to ensure that your child isn’t around or in contact with contaminated soil. What can you do?

  • Don’t let your children play in soil near industrious areas or roadways.
  • Do wash their hands and clothes after playing outdoors.
  • Do mop or wet-wipe your floors and interior surfaces to remove dust that may be contaminated.

If you suspect that your water may be supplied by lead pipes (or even worry about it in the slightest), then there are also several things you can do at home to help avoid contaminated water.

  • Make sure you have a water filter. This can be an inexpensive fix to a potentially dangerous issue.
  • Run the water for several seconds at each tap before use.
  • Only use cold water for drinking or cooking, and especially for baby formula.

You can also contact your local water supply to inquire about the levels of lead in their system or have your own, home water tested by a certified lab. You can contact the EPA’S Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 or get in touch with state or local authorities to determine how to get your water tested.

The U.S National Toxicology Program also classified lead as “reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens”. In other words, it is thought to be quite capable of causing cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer and the Environmental Protection Agency concurred—the results are in that lead is not something you want to mess around with. Studies have shown links between lead and kidney tumors as well as tumors of the brain, lung, stomach, and other organs in the body.

If you haven’t been concerned about lead contamination before reading this, it’s time to reevaluate. No dangerous risk such as lead poisoning is worth your future or your child’s future. Now that it’s almost time to head back to school, make sure your child is protected when they do!

There were more female participants at the AFA 5k than male.
The youngest participant, age 5, and the oldest participant, age 83, are both male.

The Youngest Participant & Fundraiser

Connor C. asked his mom Heather about a poster they saw with a picture of a child suffering from cancer. She explained that people run to raise money in order to help kids find treatment to feel better. Connor decided that he wanted to run to help care for the kids. He trained for weeks prior to the AFA 5k and he was very excited to help raise funds for our organization. Many people cheered him on as he crossed the finish line!  Participants commented, “I thought I was running next to a rock star or celebrity because everyone was cheering him on!” He’s such a trooper who touched our hearts!

Our Lovely Guest Speaker

Somebody else who touched our hearts was also a participant of the AFA 5k: Kristin Sauer.  She’s the recipient of AFA’s 10th grant who spoke of her journey in healing Stage 3 Breast Cancer using alternative methods. Through your support, help, and encouragement, we are able to provide a grant to those affected by cancer. Kristin’s story comes out on Tuesday, August 2nd. Watch your email box for ‘Kristin’s Story’.

We look forward to organizing next year’s AFA 5K.  Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the event; the information you provide helps us improve the next AFA 5K.

Kind Regards,

Kristin’s Story

For those of you who missed the AFA 5K on July 23rd and the interview with cancer survivor Kristin, below is her story.

2916552_1419966925-3122

At forty three years old, Kristin was doing better than ever with her health. A few years prior she had been sixty pounds heavier and struggled with high cholesterol, high blood sugar, and depression. She went on a mission to tune up her body. She became a vegan. She became a health coach. She practiced a healthy, naturally-focused diet and lifestyle. The pounds shed off and she felt fantastic, finally headed in the right direction along the tracks of life.

Unbeknownst to her and despite how great she felt, this train would quickly derail and come to a screeching halt. She started noticing that her hair was thinning and that she began to have nail ridges, which she had never had before. Suspecting that it might be due to a thyroid issue or stress, she went in for a routine physical to figure out what was going on. At the request of her doctor, Kristin agreed to get a mammogram although she wasn’t entirely sure that she needed one. Something inside of her told her to just check in case. That little voice of intuition must have been guiding her with good intent, because the results showed that she had breast cancer.

She was floored. She didn’t understand how this could be, as she was incredibly health conscious and spent so much energy on maintaining her vitality. The doctors said that they believed it to be Stage 1 Breast Cancer, guessing that the tumor itself was around 1 centimeter in size. They recommended getting a biopsy and she complied. The results showed that the tumor was in fact cancerous.

On October 22, 2014, a Lumpectomy was performed. The tumor was not 1 centimeter; the Tumor was 7 ½ centimeters and had spread into her lymph nodes. In a split second, everything had changed. What they thought was Stage 1 Breast Cancer was actually Stage 3 Breast Cancer. This was far more serious. Due to her age, they recommended aggressive chemotherapy and radiation and wanted her to begin with these therapies in 8-12 weeks.

She was caught in a storm that she could not escape. She knew how serious the diagnosis was but also had a strong desire to stay committed to her natural lifestyle. Could she fight the disease in a holistic manner, without the commonly-used and highly-recommended traditional methods? She wasn’t sure. Experts were telling her one thing. Her heart was telling her another.

She had more fear about making this choice than she did about dying from the disease. “When I was with the oncologist there was a spirit of fear. Every time I went to the oncology building there was just a spirit of fear. And I understand it because cancer is a scary thing. But I was just not willing to make the decision from a place of fear”. So what did she do? She refused to accept that she had to use traditional therapies to win this war. She dug her heels into the ground, and said no.

During those following weeks that she would have otherwise been preparing for chemo and radiation, she started researching places that would provide her with the alternative treatment goals that she preferred. After searching in other states and even in other countries, she suddenly recalled a place right near home. The Total Health Institute in Wheaton, Illinois, was a place that she was already familiar with. She had gone there in 2011 somewhere near the start of her health journey but because she was doing okay at the time, she had never continued on to use a treatment plan. How strange that life somehow brings us right back to the beginning…

Total Health was founded by Dr. Keith Namac who has traveled around the world researching and discussing alternative methods with some of the top healing minds in our time. His belief is that God created humans to live in total health and that we can do so by repairing the very connections that make us who we are. In essence, along with physical changes that need to be made, there are a number of intangible issues that need to be handled as well. Kristin says that “the whole theory behind the treatment is getting mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual alignment so that your body can do what it is designed to do, which is heal itself”.

Their belief at the institute is that we all have cancer cells, but when our body is out of balance, we are unable to keep these cells from proliferating. Therefore, they set in place an intensive six month program to get her realigned and heading down the right tracks once again. She began a number of treatments designed to fight the cancer at many different levels. Along with an intensive, raw, vegan diet, she also took many supplements for deficiencies in vitamins and minerals. She began a nine-part therapy program that involved Biophoton Laser Therapy, Colon Hydrotherapy, Lymphatic Drainage Therapy, IV Vitamin C Therapy, PEMFT (Pulsed Electrical Magnetic Field Therapy), NeuroVisceral Therapy, Heart Brain Entrainment Therapy, NeuroHormonal Therapy, and Oxygen Therapy. Each and every one of these separate pieces work together in harmony to mend the whole.

For the most part she felt okay during these treatments. On her best days she had to remind herself that she even had the disease as she physically felt well. On her worst days, she had exhaustion and nausea from the detoxification that was happening in her body. She pressed on, though, determined to heal herself in the most natural ways possible. Throughout the ordeal, Kristin began processing her experience and emotions in healthy ways such as through counseling, writing in her journal, light exercise, and praying. She recognized that many illnesses are directly influenced by outwardly issues. “When we internalize what’s going on in our world, it has to be expressed somehow. Our emotions have to be expressed. And if we don’t handle them in a healthy way, our body will get them out somehow and it’s usually through illness”. She believes that her trapped emotions expressed themselves genetically through cancer, just as others will experience illnesses such as heart disease or diabetes when they fail to release present and past burdens on the mind and soul. “For me, that was key. I really had to address that”.

She also counts on her faith and connection to Christ. As a spiritual person, she prayed and attended church. After a year and a half, her prayers have been answered as she has had three clean mammograms. She also had large fibroids that decreased fifty percent in size despite the doctors saying that these would be sticking around until they could be removed. She believes that if she continues, these will be completely gone as well.

This is not to say that it was an easy road. On top of the taxing physical and emotional aspects of her recovery, she also racked up $20,000 in bills for her treatments. Her insurance would have covered half a million for conventional therapy, but wouldn’t contribute a dime towards a natural, alternative approach (and one that has helped her tremendously). She reached out to the community and to family and friends for support and created a GoFundMe account to assist with the colossal debt that she has acquired in simply trying to get better.  After hearing from a friend about Answers for Angels, she reached out to us as well. She then became the tenth recipient of the AFA grant.

Kristin’s costs for supplements and organic foods are still very high.  Please help her make ends meet by going to her GoFundMe account to donate.  If you’d like to receive a tax receipt, donate to AnswersForAngels and mention Kristin Sauer in the memo; we will send Kristin 100% of the funds.

Kristin, we are so happy for you and are proud to assist you on your journey and fight against cancer. We fully support your alternative approach and your healthy, optimistic views on healing. We will be with you every step of the way. Here’s to your happiness, health, and to reaching five years of clean mammograms!

Frankincense- Can it Help Fight Cancer?

3225375423_05642ea235_z

Frankincense can be traced back to some of the earliest stories of mankind. It was supposedly one of the three precious gifts that the wise men brought to Bethlehem after Jesus was born. It was also a symbol of respect and honor as it scented ancient Egyptian temples and was given to royalty as gifts. At one time, it was thought to be more valuable than gold. In today’s world, it still holds a high value indeed.

From cleansing teas to herbal aromas and cleansing wounds, Frankincense has been used for a wide variety of medical and health purposes. In recent years, it has been used in treating cancer due to its ability to promote one’s own genes to heal. There are a number of different tree species from which Frankincense is harvested, located in Africa and across the Middle East. The Boswellia Serrata tree in India (pictured above) and the Boswellia Carteri in East Africa and China are the species that produce the resin linked to cancer treatment. Both have been used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis and other inflammatory diseases such as Crohn’s disease. Boswellia Serrata also exhibits anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

It is believed that Boswellia extracts possess anti-cancer properties as seen in their “anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic activities in rat astrocytoma cell lines and in human leukemia cell lines, as well as their anti-carcinogenic activity in chemically induced mouse skin cancer models” (PMC). The resin has been shown to kill glioma cells in brain cancer patients and reverse brain metastases in breast cancer patients. Studies also suggest that Frankincense oil suppresses cell survival and creates apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cultured bladder cancer cells. These findings are profound and conclude that the resin might in fact help treat various types of cancer. Other types of cancer that it might be beneficial in treating are colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, and stomach cancer.

In addition to its physical healing properties, Frankincense is also commonly used in aromatherapy and has been for an incredibly long time around the world. Its calming quality has proven useful in the treatment of anxiety, depression, and emotional problems. It has been suggested in clinical studies that Frankincense might actually deepen the breath of the individual, allowing them to experience more relaxation and grounding. It is a scent that is associated with living in the moment and letting go of burdens, which is something that we should all try a little harder to live by. When dealing with a disease such as cancer, this becomes even more important. Allow yourself time to meditate, process your emotions, and release what you can.

Essential oils are becoming very popular and you can find them online or at a local health store. You can purchase an essential oil diffuser on amazon for under $20. To use topically, rub the oil on your neck three times daily or drink three drops in water three times daily. Just as it has been a gift to others throughout history, give yourself this gift of natural healing.

Poking around at Integrative Medicine

maxresdefault

Acupuncture use can be traced back at least 2,000 years to China where it was commonly used to relieve pain, combat disease, and improve overall health. The ancient acupuncture practitioners believed that a life force or energy called Qi flowed throughout the body and that an imbalance or disruption in this energy would lead to disease or to a decline in health. To balance this energy and adjust its ability to flow would lead to optimal health.

In acupuncture practices, there are 12 meridians (or pathways) within the body and each one is associated with a respective organ. There are hundreds of points along these meridians that can be adjusted with needles that pierce the skin and allow energy to flow more freely and effectively to the targeted areas. The adjustments can improve both physical ailments (headaches, joint pain, abdomen pain, etc.) or mental ailments such as anxiety or depression. There are vast benefits of acupuncture on the mind and body and the impacts can be incredible. In fact, it is sometimes still used in China as the sole anesthetic during surgery!

There are many theories on how acupuncture works, whether the needle insertions alleviate pain by stimulating the release of endorphins or if pain impulses are blocked due to needle stimulation affecting the CNS. Others believe it to be a simple placebo effect. Regardless of how it works, the general consensus is that in some way, it certainly can.

When dealing with cancer, many patients and their families look to holistic means of recovery as one’s own mind and body can be extremely strong sources of support in healing. Due to its effectiveness in general pain relief and other common ailments, many hospitals, hospices, and clinics use acupuncture in their care. Patients are administered acupuncture to combat dry mouth, fatigue, breathlessness, hot flashes, and other uncomfortable issues. Many say that on top of the physical relief that they experience, they also find a greater sense of wellbeing and peace.

Acupuncture has not been shown to cure cancer, but it has been helpful in treating the symptoms of the disease and side effects of the medication. For cancer patients who would really like to look into alternative methods of treatment, acupuncture is a great place to start. Align your energy. Align your mind and body. Align your health. Align your life.

Keep checking us out on our blog and on our Facebook page for updated posts and event info.

We are committed to improving quality of life for those struggling with cancer and would love to help take away some of the burden from the patient and from their loved ones. If you are a patient and would like to try acupuncture at a clinic near you, please contact us for more information on how we can help cover the cost.

Here’s to fighting the fight together!
